Pre-Installation
The drivers for the kit are included with Microchip MPLAB® X IDE. Once the Curiosity Nano board is powered, the green status LED will be lit and Microchip MPLAB® X IDE will auto-detect which Curiosity Nano board is connected. Before proceeding to power on the Machine or install the drivers make sure to check the following:
- You are using the original USB 2.0 cable provided with the machine.
- The USB 2.0 cable should be plugged directly into a USB 2.0 port on the PC/Laptop. USB 3.0 ports can be identified by their Blue colour or 'ss' markings.
- If you are installing via the self-installer, keep the Machine powered off until the drivers are fully installed.
Windows Driver Installation
If you use a 64-bit version of Windows, download the 64-bit zip file and use these drivers when Windows asks for them after the Machine is powered on, otherwise use the regular (32-bit) versions:
- Windows 8.x - 64-bit
- Windows 7 - 64-bit
- Windows Vista - 64-bit
- Windows XP - 64-bit
Once the installation has finished, power on the cutter. Windows will prompt for a driver if it cannot find one, you need to locate the driver you downloaded for your version of windows.
In some cases, the driver requires Signature Verification for it to be installed in Windows. Since the Microchip driver is not Signed, this enforcement must be bypassed.
- Windows 7 solution: Download and run DSEO as Administrator, please follow the on-screen instructions.
- Windows 8 solution:
- Press the Win + C keyboard combination to bring up the Charms Bar, then click on the Settings Charm.
- When the Control Panel opens, switch over to the “Update & recovery” section.
- Then click on the Recovery option on the left hand side.
- Once selected, you will see an advanced startup section appear on the right hand side. You will need to click on the “Restart now” button.
- Once your Computer has rebooted you will need to choose the Troubleshoot option.
- Then head into Advanced options.
- Then Startup Settings.
- Since we are modifying boot time configuration settings, you will need to restart your Computer one last time.
- Finally, you will be given a list of startup settings that you can change. The one we are looking for is “Disable driver signature enforcement”. To choose the setting, you will need to press the F7 key.
- After restarting, you should be able to install the drivers as normal
When windows loads the driver it will create a COM device for the Machine. Open windows Device Manager and take note of the USB Serial Device COM number (COM3, for example).
You will need to know this COM number for the next step:
Mac OS (X) Driver Installation
Mac OS (X) requires the use of an FTDI-adaptor for the Machines to function correctly via USB. If you have an FTDI adaptor, please follow the FTDI driver installation Guide to get it set up.
GNU/Linux & UNIX
GNU/Linux & UNIX require the use of an FTDI-adaptor for the Machines to function correctly via USB. If you have an FTDI adaptor, please follow the FTDI driver installation Guide to get it set up.
