Mac computers that have any of the following ports can connect to HDMI devices. Learn how to identify the ports on your Mac.

  • 8-channel/24-bit audio at 192kHz, Dolby Surround 5.1 and traditional stereo
  • HDCP-encrypted playback from iTunes and QuickTime Player (version 10). Safari in macOS Sierra or later also supports HDCP-encrypted playback, if the web page is HTML5-enabled and the content is FairPlay Streaming-enabled and delivered using Media Source Extensions or HTTP Live Streaming.

After making the connection

If your Mac doesn't recognise your HDTV, display or other HDMI device after making the connection:

  1. Turn off the HDMI device while your Mac is turned on.
  2. Unplug the HDMI cable from your Mac, then plug it in again.
  3. Turn on the HDMI device.

If the video on your HDTV or display extends beyond the borders of the screen, open Displays preferences and adjust the Underscan slider for a better fit. Use any of these methods to open Displays preferences:

  • Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences, then click Displays.
  • Press Shift-Command-A to open the Applications folder. Then double-click System Preferences, then click Displays.
  • If your keyboard has brightness controls, press Option–Brightness Up or Option–Brightness Down.


If your HDMI device isn't receiving audio from your Mac:

  • Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Sound. In the Output pane, make sure that your HDMI device is selected.
  • If you're connecting using a Mini DisplayPort adaptor, make sure that your Mac can send audio over Mini DisplayPort.
  • If you're connecting from a Mac mini, unplug any audio device that is plugged into your computer's Audio-Out port.

If your Mac goes to sleep while a video is playing or paused, you might see an HDCP error. Quit the app that is playing the video, then open the app again. If the issue continues, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Energy Saver and adjust the settings so that your display doesn't turn off.

Using an HDMI Cable

Press the 'Power' buttons on your computer and Philips TV to turn them off. Unplug them from the wall.

Connect a HDMI cable to your computer's HDMI port. Since it will only go in the correct way, ensure that you orient it correctly and do not force it.

3.

Insert the plug on the other end of the cable into an open HDMI port on your Philips TV.

4.

Plug both your TV and computer back into the wall and press their respective 'Power' buttons to turn them on.

5.

Press the 'Source' button on the TV's remote control until the HDMI port to which you connected your PC is selected. You might need to press it a few times to cycle through to the correct input.

Using a VGA Cable

1.

Press the 'Power' button on your Philips TV to turn it off. Unplug it from the wall. Repeat this process with your computer.

2.

Connect one of the 15-pin VGA connectors on your VGA cable to your computer's VGA port. Tighten the thumbscrews to hold it in place.

3.

Insert the other VGA connector into your Philips TV's 'RGB (PC)' connector.

4.

Insert one end of your audio line-in cable into the line-out port on your computer. It will be a 3.5-mm jack that might be light green.

5.

Connect the other end of the line-in cable to the 'PC Audio' connector on your TV. It should be located near the VGA connector.

6.

Reinsert your TV and computer's power plugs into their wall sockets and press their 'Power' buttons to turn them on.

7.

Press the 'Source' button on remote control for your Philips TV until your computer's image appears on screen. Since the button cycles through every input, you will probably have to press it repeatedly.

After making the connection
