Mac keyboard symbol shortcuts

You can input more text symbols on Macintosh computers with the use of keyboard than you see painted on your keyboard.

Diacritical (accents, umlauts)

To type accent characters, like ñ Á á in Spanish language, experiment with [Option] key. Note, that [A] + [B] stands for holding both keys pressed down at the same time. Just Like you hold [Shift] and [A] to make UPCASE 'A' letter.

You can use standard built-in applet called 'Keyboard viewer' to make things easier. It displays an on-screen keyboard layout which changes when you press modifier keys like [Option] and [Shift]. This layout is also different for different languages you select, so Keyboard Viewer can also help you see which key stands for what characters if you switch to a different language.

To enable Keyboard Viewer

Choose Apple menu ➢ System Preferences and click International.
Click Input Menu, then select the check-box next to Keyboard Viewer.
Select the 'on' check-box next to language whose keyboard layout you want to use.
Choose Show Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu on the right side of the menu bar (the one that looks like a flag).

Now, depending on the language you select, a flag will be in the menu bar. Whenever you want to type a special character, click the flag and select 'Show Keyboard Viewer'. When you press Shift and Option buttons, the on-screen keyboard will show up. And the good thing is, you don't have to keep a list of shortcut codes near you.

Keyboard shortcuts for symbols

While still using your own language, you can type symbols like '√ ∑ π ™ © æ £ ¢', etc. with your keyboard. Try pressing [Option] key, or [Option] + [Shift] combination with Keyboard Viewer open to see what else you need to press to make these special characters. For example, [Option] + [v] produces √.

The fonts are provided in Unicode-encoded TrueType format. The Windows and Macintosh versions of the fonts are cross-platform compatible. They permit direct exchange of all their standard Unicode-encoded characters with any other Unicode-encoded font containing those characters on either platform. Many of these fonts contain distinctive characters found only in that manuscript. To view these, users must have the same font installed, whether on the same platform or on the other platform. All of these Greek fonts also include the extra characters (such as text-critical sigla, manuscript symbols, superscript or subscript numbers, and manuscript grain direction arrows) that are included in all Linguist’s Software Unicode-encoded Greek fonts (LaserGreek in Unicode, sold separately).

NT Mss. Font Collection – VaticanusLSU includes two fonts

VaticanusLSU contains the letters and other special characters necessary to reproduce the standard character form text of Codex Vaticanus in the 'original hand.' Because many users may want to type the original hand, but also display the breathing marks and accents of the reinforcing hand, the VaticanusLSU font includes these diacritical marks in the same positions as the VaticanusRLSU font.

VaticanusRLSU contains the letters, breathing marks, accents and other special characters necessary to reproduce the standard character form text of Codex Vaticanus in the 'reinforced hand' from the Middle Ages. The 'R' in the font name stands for 'reinforced.' The character strokes of the reinforced hand are typically slightly thinner than the original hand. The VaticanusRLSU font is the same in layout and content as the VaticanusLSU font, with the exception that the alphabetic letters and ligatures follow the handwriting style of the reinforcing hand.

Both fontscontain the additional special letters, numbers, and symbols that embellish Codex Vaticanus. This sample shows many of these characters, and demonstrates how the bars and scrolls that decorate the codex are created.

Using these two fonts together you can type text just as it was originally copied by its scribe in 325-350 A.D. This sample from the beginning of Romans was typed in Microsoft Word for Macintosh, opened in Word for Windows (with no conversion necessary) and a screen shot was then made of the text.

The secret to creating the above text sample is to type it in your word processor using tables, like this:

The above text was then imported into a graphics program, arranged, and color was applied. It faithfully reproduces the beginning of Romans in Codex Vaticanus. This shows you what is possible using the VaticanusLSU fonts.

NT Mss. Font Collection – SinaiticusLSU includes a single font

SinaiticusLSU contains the primary variant forms of the characters, ligature forms, punctuation and extendible overstriking bars for creating titles and abbreviations occurring in Codex Sinaiticus. The font also includes forms with breathings and accents from the extended Greek section of the Unicode Standard. Another useful feature is the automatic formation of nomina sacra. (This is a sample from Codex Sinaiticus – the end of Romans and beginning of 1 Corinthians.)

NT Mss. Font Collection – AlexandrinusLSU includes a single font

AlexandrinusLSU contains the primary variant forms of the characters, large alphabet, ligature forms, punctuation and extendible overstriking bars for creating titles and abbreviations occurring in Codex Alexandrinus. (This sample is from John 21, starting at verse 25, formatted just as it is found in Codex Alexandrinus.)

NT Mss. Font Collection – BezaeLSU includes a single font

BezaeLSU contains the primary variant forms of the characters, the kai ligature, punctuation and extendible overstriking bars for creating titles and abbreviations occurring in Codex Bezae. (This sample is from Matthew 22, starting at verse 38.)

NT Mss. Font Collection – BezaeLatinLSU includes a single font

BezaeLatinLSU contains the primary form of the characters, punctuation, and extendible overstriking bars for creating titles and abbreviations occurring in the Latin text of Codex Bezae.

(BezaeLatinLSU does not include Greek, or the extra Greek symbols, found in the other fonts. It only supports the Latin text of Codex Bezae.)

NT Mss. Font Collection – WashingtonianusLSU includes two fonts

WashingtonianusLSU contains the primary variant forms of the characters, ligature forms, punctuation and extendible overstriking bars for creating titles and abbreviations occurring in Codex Washingtonianus. (This is a sample of text from Codex Washingtonianus - the beginning of Mark.)

WashingtonianusJnQIU is like WashingtonianusLSU, but contains the primary variant forms of the characters, ligature forms, punctuation and extendible overstriking bars for creating titles and abbreviations occurring in the first quire of John in Codex Washingtonianus. This is called the 'second hand' of Washingtonianus.

The font also includes the special symbols and decorations of the quire.

Both fonts also contain over 90 nomina sacra, abbreviations, numbers and rare symbols occurring in Codex Washingtonianus. Three alternate input methods are included in the product—overstriking overbars, direct keyboard input of whole nomina sacra, or in OpenType-compatible applications automatic formation. (This sample shows the nomina sacra in the font.)

Operating Systems

Requires Windows 10, 8, 7, or Vista. (An older version that supports Windows XP, or 2000 SP3 is available. Contact the sales office or specify the Windows XP version in the Special Instructions text box on the order form.)

Applications

Requires any Unicode-compatible application, such as Microsoft Word, OpenOffice.org 3.0 or newer, LibreOffice, QuarkXPress® 7.0 or newer, Adobe® InDesign® and Microsoft Publisher.
Other components of Microsoft Office are believed to be compatible, but have not been tested. Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 and earlier is not compatible.
Older, non-Unicode applications such as QuarkXPress 6.5 and earlier, PageMaker, and FrameMaker are not compatible.
Certain features of some of the fonts can more easily be typed using an OpenType input method. This method requires an application that supports the OpenType layout features built into the fonts. The only applications known to support these features are Microsoft Word, OpenOffice.org 3.2 or newer, LibreOffice, InDesign CS4 or newer, and QuarkXPress 8.02 or newer. Other components of Office (except PowerPoint 2003) should also be compatible, but have not been tested. QuarkXPress 7 may be compatible, but has not been tested. Microsoft Office 2007 is not compatible with the OpenType input method.

The only Macintosh applications we are aware of that support Unicode at this time are Microsoft Word 2011/2008/2004, Mellel, InDesign CS, QuarkExpress 7.0 or newer, OpenOffice, Pages, Nisus Writer Express, TextEdit (included with Mac OS X), Oxygen, and BBEdit. We have only tested the fonts in Word 2004, Mellel, Nisus Writer Express and TextEdit. (If you are aware of additional applications please let us know.)
Certain features of some of the fonts can more easily be typed using an OpenType input method. This method requires an application that supports the OpenType layout features built into the fonts. The only applications known to support these features are the Mellel word processor, available from Linguist's Software, or InDesign CS5 or newer.
